Extended-hours waiver application open for NBA All-Star Weekend in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Deadline is next week for venues in Cleveland to apply for an extended-hours waiver to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. during next month’s NBA All-Star Weekend.

The weekend of festivities and games is Friday, Feb. 18, through Sunday, Feb. 20, though the waiver period runs into Feb. 21 since it goes until 4 a.m. The All-Star Game itself is 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Places interested in serving alcohol until 4 a.m. during the time frame must apply by noon Thursday, Jan. 20.

Ohio passed a law prior to the 2016 Republican National Convention, allowing approved venues to serve alcohol later than the usual 2:30 a.m. limit. For prescribed events, venues in the city of Cleveland can apply for a waiver with the Ohio Division of Liquor Control to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. Other cities can set their own extension process. Lakewood, for example, did so in 2019.

Businesses can apply online. Applications must be emailed as an attached PDF, JPG or PNG to The local organizing committee will submit completed applications to the city for review. The city then provides a list of recommended waiver recipients to the Ohio Division of Liquor Control. The state will notify businesses if they are granted a waiver.

David Gilbert, co-chairman of the local organizing committee and president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and Destination Cleveland, said in a release the normal deadlines to apply would have passed, but the process has been extended “in light of the continuing challenges faced by hospitality businesses as well as the change of administration in the City of Cleveland.”
